“Your girlfriend doesn’t look too happy today,” other employees would sometimes say to me. “Oh, that’s just how she usually looks if she isn’t smiling,” I explained. It was true. If she wasn’t beaming with joy from ear to ear, she had a sense of annoyed anger splashed across her face.
