You’re on a beach. Probably at night. Probably with countless stars up in the sky that twinkle themselves alive right above you and whoever you’re with. Gentle waves wash ashore and back out to sea in a slow-motion pulse. Enter Malibu’s music. But not just any track will do. Instead, it’s this one that takes center stage inside your mind and perhaps inside your headphones as well.
And so it starts.
The beginning feels like an ambient soundscape, not racing from second to second, but not standing still either. Slowly, a harmony flows in. It doesn’t intensely pull you by the collar, but instead, coyly tugs at your sleeve to follow it…, maybe out towards the water itself.
Airy synths take up most of the track’s three minutes and fifty seconds. But just when it seems like you’ve understood everything there is to know about the song, delicate vocals float in that swell and shrink back just like the calming ocean waves continuing to keep some type of timed beat in the background. It all crescendos into something heartbreakingly beautiful within its last few seconds as the vocals stop just short of completely spilling over.
And then it ends. Almost with a question mark. Almost like it’s just asked you something very personal and now it’s up to you to decide what to do with it.
As for me, I usually just hit the repeat button.
